Tales from HTPC7even

Introduction

It's been some times ago since HTPC7even was established in its current state. When I remember, I will insert the approximate date here. Before these times, there was an HTPC7even as well – for many years, but it was different ... it was on the dark side of operating systems, u know? .... I don't wanna talk about this, as I don't want to raise the daemons of the past. I want to talk about the new HTPC7even, the good one. As I mentioned, it started some years ago and from then it served as main TV receiver and recorder on german cable TV for my private needs.

You can expect no integrity. You can expect no chronological order. You can not expect any satisfaction from what will follow here. But you may encounter subversive tendencies of joy; you may find artefacts of desolated truths, covered by deep dives of desperation. Or you may find nothing at all.

So, if you want to proceed, proceed at your own risk. To hear of the tales from HTPC7even ...

Tale #1: The Throughput Metering (2016-10-31)

Legends told about some new kind of dimensions. HTPC7even never encountered them personally. But the rumours were strong and ... repetitive. While repetition is not a guarantee for truth as Germany had to learn recently (by the famous AfD liars), the sources of these repetitions were far more reliable. Especially by Server7even HTPC7even often was introduced into the magical world of ... terabytes!

As time went by, it started to mumble deep inside of HTPC7even .... at the beginning, this was not a clear sign of desire. Over time though, the direct wish to enter the terabyte era obviously become apparent and grew stronger and stronger. HTPC7even still fulfilled all its duties without bitching around, but the request for new storage established as dominant complain.

For avoiding any unnecessary noise, the storage of HTPC7even is based on solid state disks completely since ssds entered the market. It started with a 64 GB Super Talent Ultradrive ME and was extended to one 250 GB Samsung 840 EVO plus one 512 GB Crucial MX100 meanwhile.

While preparing for this next storage extension, the SMART values of these drives should give an insight on the approximate storage traffic the htpc box produces:

  • Crucial_CT512MX100SSD1 512 GB wrote 6,3 TB of data since it was engaged while serving 6264 hours powered on with 2230 power cycle counts
  • Samsung SSD 840 EVO 250GB wrote 7,6 TB of data while being 7291 hours powered on, with 2466 power cycles and an additional information of 52 Wear Leveling Counts

Just to spit out all data available, following the statistics from the MythTV installation - though these numbers can not directly be compared to the drives SMART values, because of the different time dimensions (absolute times vs. powered on times):

  • Number of shows: 1329
  • Number of recordings: 7474
  • First recording: 2012-09-19
  • Runtime: 4 years, 1 month, 12 days
  • Recording time: 10 months, 10 days, 9 hours
  • Percentaged recording time: 20%

to be continued ...
